Playa del Rey: Getting Old School Italian with Catalini’s Salerno Beach Restaurant
Before I left for New Orleans earlier this month, I spent some time in Playa del Rey. My original intention of checking out all the fancy new spots in PDR didn’t work out and I ended up at old school favorite Catalini’s Salerno Beach. The locals call it Salerno’s. There was a short wait so they said we should enjoy a drink at Harbor Room, the attached bar.
I eyeballed the place and quickly decided the Glenlivet 12 couldn’t be more than $8. And I was right! I wasn’t even halfway done when they called our table so that was nice.
Since I knew I wasn’t going to be eating anything but gumbo in NOLA (by choice!), I opted to get an Italian salad. The lettuce was crisp and the dressing was tangy. What more do you want?
When faced with deciding which sauce and pasta combo to get, I went with the classic spaghetti and meatballs. But I couldn’t resist adding sausage. By the way, make sure you say you want only one sausage. For some reason I got two which I thought was a lucky score until I got charged for two sausages. But you know what? Totally worth it.
So eat up, everyone’s happy with a bottle of chianti at this place. As for me? I am probably getting lasagna… and more Glenlivet next time.
