Frogtown: Salazar is Now Open

Salazar in Frogtown (aka Elysian Valley) is now open. Opened by Mexicali Tacos’ Esdras Ochoa, the grilled tacos restaurant took over an old auto repair shop and has completely transformed the space. This is going to be a great neighborhood brunch spot with grilled tacos and plenty of cocktails. The full bar is run by Aaron Melendrez (most recently of The Walker Inn) and you’ll see other talented faces behind the bar.

I swung by Friends and Family night and sampled a few drinks. We got the boozy agua frescas and while I liked them all, my favorite was the Horchata. It’s labeled a traditional rice drink but the ingredients are dazzling with rice from Asia and I really liked the Selvarey cacao rum in this. It works perfectly. The other stand out is the Verde with the Rutte celery gin. It’s so refreshing. And luckily there’s a beautiful patio to enjoy these drinks on.

Horchata – Selvarey cacao rum, horchata

Jamaica – mezcal, cognac, hibiscus, canela

Verde – Rutte celery gin, pear brandy, cucumber, green apple, lime

I’ll have to return for more tacos but I was able to snag one chicken taco. Normally I wouldn’t go for chicken when I get tacos but this one was great. The chicken was tender and very flavorful.

As mentioned, there are a bevy of cool bartenders whipping up not only Salazar’s house drinks but do mention what you like to drink. You might end up with this wonderful whiskey smash.
