Mid-City: Free Wine Tastings at Pizza Romana on Thursdays

wine tasting at Pizza Romana
Pizza Romana on La Brea started free Thursday night wine tastings a couple of months ago in their wine room. The event called Enoteca Nights features tastes of a few wines while you can enjoy small bites of pizza bianca (pizza bread), cheese and salumi. But I would suggest picking a wine and then heading back to the main dining room after the tasting for a maximum enjoyment of pizza. Plus, Romana is known for their spicy fried chicken.
Pizza Romana took over the old Cube space. While the owners remain the same, they wanted to change up the concept. Everything at Romana is imported. The wine director told me that even the pizza dough comes from Italy. And of course, everything is cooked perfectly in their Italian pizza oven.

selection of cheeses and salumi
What’s great about the Enoteca nights is you can buy bottles at 20% off to take home.

wine tasting
We found a couple of wines we liked and headed back to the dining room craving pizza.

Caesar salad
I’m a big fan of eating balanced meals so I had to get the salad and a vegetable side. My dining companion probably thought I was being silly because there is a bit of greenery on our pizza we got.
Good produce means great tasting food. The Caesar was absolutely fresh with a light tangy dressing.

buffalo mozzarella pizza
Although we had proscuitto with our salumi earlier, we couldn’t resist the buffalo mozzarella pizza with the imported mozarrella. It’s a very classic Italian pizza. The crust was my favorite kind; nicely chewy with a slight “leopard spotting.”

fried chicken
We had to find room for the spicy fried chicken which you can either get the tenders or the boneless half chicken. We got the tenders. I didn’t think it was spicy as so much as deeply flavorful. That’s when they offered me their Italian Calabrian chili sauce. Be sure to add a little to the housemade ranch dressing.

cauliflower
As mentioned, I got a veggie side. I chose the cauliflower which they throw in the pizza oven. I can eat cauliflower raw or cooked but cooked is so much better from that imported Italian oven.
Pizza Romana is a lovely place for pizza but there were a few other things I want to explore next time. And of course, there’s the excuse to go weekly- check them out on Thursdays. The wine tastings start at 5 p.m. and you’re welcome to join them anytime during the night until close.
