Highland Park: Sandwiches at Tinfoil Liquor & Grocery

Cuban Reuben

I recently completed a multi-stop bang bang (food crawl) in Highland Park. One of the stops included Tinfoil which was initially billed as a sandwich “speakeasy” when it first opened complete with a secret password.

I ordered a couple of sandwiches to try including the Cuban Reuben and the OG. The Cuban Reuben has ham, pastrami, Swiss cheese, pickles and a mojo slaw. It was extremely meaty and large. I did like this mash-up of a traditional Cubano (ham, cheese, pkckles) with the addition of pastrami and slaw. It’s like having two of your favorite sandwiches at the same time which is of course what Tinfoil was going for.

I didn’t get any sides but they had (unsurprisingly) a chopped kale salad, cole slaw, macaroni salad, potato salad and a black quinoa salad. I could see this would be a good spot to pick up sandwiches and sides and heading out to a picnic or the Hollywood Bowl in the summer (I’m a big picnic fan).

OG

I almost didn’t get the OG sandwich. I was eyeing the vegan jackfruit sandwich but then I came to my senses. The OG is corned beef on rye with Russian dressing and Swiss cheese. It was my favorite! The warm melted cheese and very good corned beef made this sandwich. Although I normally like sauerkraut with such sandwiches, this didn’t need any distracting tart slaw.

I do love that it’s attached a hipster corner store where you can pick up (good) booze, kombucha and other healthy things with your fancy sandwiches. I spotted some mini bottles of vermouth. Oh yeah, the Minty popup bar is definitely happening soon.
