Beverly Hills: Lobster Bisque and Steak Tartare at The Grill on The Alley

basil gimlet
I’ve been on a steak tartare kick lately and after hitting a bunch of restaurants across Los Angeles, we went to my friend’s favorite spot, The Grill on the Alley. The Grill is part of the Daily Grill and Public School restaurant group. But it doesn’t feel at all like a chain restaurant. It reminds me of old school steak houses. The wait staff wears white jackets and it feels slightly formal.
I got a basil gimlet as it was a hot day. I feared it’d be too sweet knowing the Rodeo crowd so I asked for it to be less sweet. I got a satisfactory and tart drink.

lobster bisque
The Grill was kind enough to split one bowl of lobster bisque into two cups. I love, love, love lobster bisque. It was thick but not like a chowder. It actually reminded me a bit of a corn chowder made with fresh summer corn I had once but obviously lobster. I liked the little bits of lobster as well. Bonus, their bread is great as well.

steak tartare
Verdict on the steak tartare? I thought it was a bit mushy but it had good flavor. Our server explained a classic tartare should be made in a wooden bowl without any metal touching the meat.
I’d definitely return for the bisque and tartare. And maybe explore more of the menu. But I like the idea of having these staples at the bar.
