SGV: That Beef Roll at 101 Noodle Express

Back in May, I did a Japanese Food Week and now it’s time for Chinese Food Week here on The Minty. To start things off, I’m in the San Gabriel Valley revisiting and checking out new spots. Plus I travel around Los Angeles from Mid-City to Silver Lake. It’s going to be a delicious week!
It’s been a few years since I did a beef roll crawl when 101 Noodle Express had one or two locations. Now they are an empire with 5 locations from Culver City to Irvine.

Eight years ago, I went to the location on Baldwin in Arcadia. I found it a bit too sweet for me. But as I ate the one at the Alhambra location, I realized a couple of things- the sauce wasn’t as heavily applied and it was really very good. In fact, I decided other things at 101 were better including the dumplings.
Still, I could only manage two big pieces because I knew we were going on a mini food crawl.

cucumber with garlic
We alternated bites with cool, crisp cucumber with garlic. 101 Noodle Express is very generous with this appetizer.

shrimp and pork dumplings with leeks
We wanted the shrimp and pork dumplings but they were out of them. So our helpful server suggested the shrimp, pork and leeks dumplings. These were very good. They were simply boiled but I would not have minded pan fried ones.
There were also xiao long bao but the next stop was calling to us.
I hadn’t been to this location before on Valley. I would return to this one despite being closer to the Arcadia one. I liked the food here more. I’m thinking the beef roll would make great picnic food and would be a wonderful addition to a feast at the Hollywood Bowl.
