Echo Park: All the Mezcal at Bar Calo
It so happened to be National Margarita Day so one of my friends had the market margarita. It was delicious. Another friend had a Don Negroni (not shown). It’s a Negroni with mezcal instead of gin. I had the Chavala which reminded me of a black Manhattan but swapping out amaro for the chile liqueur and of course with tequila instead of whiskey.
As I looked around the cozy room, I promised myself I’ll have to visit again. I really liked Bar Calo.
Market margarita – tequila, seasonal fruit, lime, salt
Chavala – tequila reposado, Ancho Reyes chile liqueur, sweet vermouth, Hellfire bitters
We also tasted a couple of different mezcals neat. This is a mezcal haven in Echo Park.
You’ll want to spend some time at this bar. I suggest long drinks like La Furia to get you started. This variation of a highball was wonderful. I also liked the Dream Tigers which I thought of as neo tiki.
La Furia – tequila, cinnamon syrup, mulled wine, lime, soda water
Dream Tigers – mezcal, tequila, plantain puree, orgeat, lemon, pineapple, mole bitters
I loved the Dream Tigers so much, I ordered one for myself. Well, maybe it’s not neo tiki so much as just tropical even though it’s served in a fun tiki glass. The plantain puree and orgeat gave it a lot of viscosity.
And we’re back to sipping mezcal neat. I wish I lived much closer to Bar Calo!
* * for those looking for Laotian food, the popup is back!
It’s now popping up at Lot 1 Cafe in Echo Park.
