Santa Monica: Border Grill
I recently had a late-night nosh over at the Santa Monica Border Grill. The original, the grand dame. I’ll visit the new one in Downtown eventually. That one took over the old Ciudad space.
We had trooped over from Hostaria del Piccolo, lured by the idea of late-night happy hour. Unfortunately that deal is only for Fridays and Saturdays after 10 p.m.
We ordered a variety of things. Christie from LA Weekly and Pardon My Crumbs said the turkey tostadas were her favorite and we had to get them. I wanted the mushroom quesadilla which was quite unassuming to look at but had the most flavor. And we also wanted tacos. The only tacos they had were lamb. We’ll have to come back for happy hour for a better assortment.
It’s funny to think how this Border Grill has been a touch stone in my life. I used to every so often with an ex. The gaucho steak was my favorite but of course I didn’t order it this night as it was nearing 10 p.m. And watching the Two Hot Tamales demonstrate cooking techniques at this Border Grill was my favorite kind of “cooking class.” I do credit them to this day with teaching me how to cook chayote squash.
Several restaurants, a truck, a stop…I look forward to see where Susan Feniger and Mary Sue Miliken go next!

Should I take the fact that you didn’t say much about how the food tasted to mean that you weren’t a big fan this time around?

Yeah, you got it. It was the end of the night and they were closing up. We were the only customers. I think they wanted us to hurry up and leave.

That’s a shame. I usually enjoy my meals there, even if I’m never really surprised or blown away.
