West Hollywood: Farmers’ Market Sundays at Eveleigh
Every Sunday, The Eveleigh serves up cocktails inspired by farmers’ markets. I dropped in a couple of weeks back where 2012 The Minty Hot Bartender nominee Chris Amirault formerly of MessHall now works.
The list had four cocktails to choose from. I opted to begin with My Cousin Vinny (rye, Ramazzotti, lemon, chocolate mint, strawberry). It was served over beautiful pebble ice with a halved strawberry and powdered sugar garnish. It was perfectly balanced and hinted at the coming summer. I was sitting at the front bar and longed to be out on the beach. But I thought this drink went down way too quickly. It was just so quaffable.
It was fortuitous then the Caliban’s Swizzle (Batavia Arrack, Smith & Cross infused maple syrup, lime, ginger, Angostura) was a long drink. Chris told me he came up with the Smith and Cross maple syrup originally as a special Valentine’s Day pancake breakfast for his girlfriend bartender Karen Grill (Bestia). Aww. Karen then encouraged him to come up with a drink. Despite the high-proof rum and arrack, this was also very easy swilling, drinking. Plus, I love swizzles and there’s that great ice again.
But I was done with those fruity citrus-y drinks. I wanted to go back to my old man drinks. Chris surprised me with a brown, bitter, stirred drink he described as an Old Pal meets a Left Hand to which another bartender made a lascivious joke. Ah, hanging with the dudes.
It probably didn’t help that by this time several off duty bartenders came in. Did someone say picklebacks? The Eveleigh serves theirs with mezcal and their housemade brine. Delicious. And yes, it was a party.
Farmers’ Market cocktails start at 5 p.m. on Sundays. Swing in for a late brunch and stay for cocktails.

Those sound like some good cocktails. Wish bars in my neighborhood made them like that.
