DTLA: Sandwiches at The Hero Shop
From the team that brought you Black Hogg in Silver Lake comes Hero Shop. The new sandwich shop in Downtown Los Angeles is a clean, tidy shop just a few doors down from Cole’s. When I visited a couple of weeks ago, there was no seating indoors but there are plans for patio seating soon. You could eat standing against the rail inside but I rather go on an urban picnic and take my sammie to a nearby park or parklet.
I wanted to try almost every sandwich on the menu but opted to go with the classic cold cut done as a banh mi. The creamy marinated head cheese and thickly slathered pate really makes this sandwich. I also enjoyed the crunch of the pickled veggies and soft bread.
I might have to have a sandwich party and bring friends because I want to try the sardine, spice and sour chicken, brisket and blood sausage. There are vegetarian options as well including broccoli and lemongrass tofu. Although it’s a sandwich shop, there are a few rice bowls. The BBQ pork with sous vide egg would be excellent option over rice.
Hero Shop is a great lunch option for DTLA. I hope they expand their hours to later evening hours soon.
