Drinks at the Melrose Umbrella Company
I finally had a chance to check out the new Melrose Umbrella Company a couple of weeks ago. I had gone right before they opened for a bartending competition but wanted to come back on a regular night. At this time, Melrose Umbrella is working on changing their license which requires them to close at 11 p.m. Sunday-Wednesday so go on Thursday! In fact, go tonight for guest bartenders Jaymee Mandeville (formerly Drago Centro) and Cari Hah (City Tavern DTLA). On the plus side, Melrose Umbrella does open at 4 p.m. every day.
The umbrella refers to the days after Prohibition was repealed. If you saw a picture of an umbrella with rain coming from inside the umbrella, it signified “many wet days to come.” Zachary Patterson runs the fine beverage program there.
I thought it should be fitting then I try out a drink named after Zach, the Patterson’s Nap. The description on the menu also included a question – is it still a nap if it’s been 12 hours? Well, if we have enough of these, we may find out! If you like Boulevardiers aka whiskey Negronis, you might want to check out the Patterson’s Nap for your summer drink. The addition of citrus makes it easy drinking. Ah, I can see how ordering a few of these can get out of control…leading to a nap.
Patterson’s Nap – Buffalo Trace bourbon, Campari, tangerine, lemon
Other drinks I’d like to try are Romance Without Pressure (Oxley gin, passion fruit, cucumber, grapefruit) and Soda Jerk (Zaya rum, orgeat, ginger beer, Angostura bitters). I’m into the classics like Army and Navy (Plymouth gin, orgeat, lemon) and Penicillin (Chivas 12 scotch, lemon, ginger, honey). Plus they have Fernet-Branca on draft.
