SGV: Hainan Chicken at Tasty Food

Hainan chicken
Tasty Food has recently garnered attention for their Hainan (Hainanese) chicken. I was on the last leg of my wonton research but also decided to try Harlam’s Kitchen neighbor for this classic comfort food.
For comparison, we also got the Hainan chicken at Golden Bull Noodle next door.
Tasty Food encourages you to call them to make sure they have the chicken as it tends to sell out and you don’t have to wait as long. However, the wait time was under 15 minutes. They also sell a fried chicken version that I want to try next time.
Tasty Food’s take-out box was crammed full of goodies. I loved the cucumber, pickled greens and sauces. My friend thought the soup was sweet but I loved it. It reminds me of the sweet corn chicken soup you get at Hong Kong style cafes around San Gabriel Valley.
As for the chicken, you get a lot of it! Although we had two bowls of wontons and another Hainan chicken plate, I don’t think we would have been able to finish this between the two of us as the portion was beyond generous.
The chicken is de-boned which is nice. It’s also very tender.
The rice was a surprise for me as it was coconut flavored. I’m not a big coconut person but I still enjoyed it
Break out the tissue if you watch the video on their site… and then go get some chicken and rice!
