Bourbon Fans: Cocktail Recipes
After I get to know a bartender, I might ask for a bartender’s choice. Usually a bartender will ask for some direction and I immediately answer bourbon. Results are inevitably delicious and often I get to try wonderful almost-forgotten cocktails from years past.
Here are some of my favorites.
Fancy Free
- 2 oz Bourbon
- 0.5 oz maraschino liqueur
- 1-2 dashes Angostura bitters
- 1-2 dashes Orange bitters
- Stir well with ice and strain into chilled cocktail glass
Ward 8
- 2 oz bourbon
- 3/4 oz orange juice
- 3/4 oz lemon juice
- 1/4 grenadine
- Shake and strain into cocktail glass
Red Hook
- 2 oz rye whiskey
- ½ oz Punt e Mes
- ½ oz Maraschino liqueur
- Stir with ice and strain in to a cocktail glass.
Okay, so this is a rye drink but no harm in making it with bourbon if you like it a bit sweeter. I actually do like this with rye.

I plan to make a couple of these. I’ve been enjoying making simple cocktails with my bottle of Bulleit. Last week I made the Revolver, which was surprisingly good featuring coffee liqueur.
