Studio City: First Look at Black Market Liquor Bar
I can count how many times I’ve been to the Valley this year on one hand. When I found myself in Studio City this week, I decided to drop into Black Market Liquor Bar which has been open for about a month. It’s receiving quite a bit of buzz because the cocktails were designed by Pablo Moix and Steve Livigni of La Descarga and Harvard and Stone fame. The chef is Antonia Lofaso who has competed on Top Chef. Add in no signage and bad parking, you could be anywhere in LA
We started with a couple of drinks while perusing the menu. Jennie from Happy Hour Tour chose the Blackberry Cobbler (genever, blackberry, lemon). It wasn’t too sweet and very refreshing.
I went with the Boulevard Sour (rye, Cynar, egg whites, lemon) though I had my eye on the Punch for One (pisco, pineapple, agave, lime, Angostura bitters) or The Colombian (Aguardiente, lime, sugar). I was interested in the Colombian ever since Val of Trippy Food told me about Aguardiente, the national liquor of Colombia (much like pisco is the national pride of Peru– and Chile). I have also heard the Ambers and Embers cocktail is a winner. Made with Scotch, Clement cane syrup, Angostura and orange bitters, the cocktail sounded wicked smokey smooth.
We ordered a couple of plates to share. We weren’t terribly hungry but I wanted a little nibble. The crispy collard greens were great with the Benton ham, cheesy grits and fried egg. I thought the soft shell crab po’boy was on the smaller side but tasty.
Overall, I can’t believe I’m thinking about making another trip out to the Valley. It’s really fantastic there’s finally a proper craft cocktail bar in the Valley (though Boneyard Bistro is trying) with a menu that tickles my foodie ways.
