SGV: Beef Noodle Soup at Tasty Dumpling House

I can eat dumplings every day. When I was at Lunasia for dim sum a few months ago, I noticed this new dumplings shop called Tasty Dumpling House across the street. I gathered up a couple of friends to try it out. We decided to get two sets of dumplings, a noodle dish and a couple of appetizers.

For the dumplings, we tried the pan fried pork and steamed house special dumplings. These were fine but nothing amazing. My best friend thought they should have been juicier. I like the pan fried beef dumplings at Peking Tavern in DTLA much more.

seaweed salad

I love seaweed and order seaweed salad whenever I see it. Sadly this one at Tasty Dumpling was too sweet. The dressing balance wasn’t quite right. It needed to be more tart (more black vinegar) or spicy. There was too much sugar in the marinade.

celery and wood ear salad

Some call wood ear a mushroom but it’s really a fungus. When my best friend showed up, we had already ordered this and the seaweed. I don’t think she’s had such “interesting” appetizers in a while. I consider it very normal and very welcome. The salad was very nice. The celery tasted like it was blanched so instead of a harsh, raw vegetal flavor, it picked up a lot of the dressing.

The beef noodle soup at Tasty Dumpling is unlike any other beef noodle soup I’ve had a Chinese restaurant. The broth was almost creamy and tasted like tomatoes. It is not spicy. I almost wanted to ask for chili oil to add to it but perhaps it wouldn’t have gone so well with the creamy tomato-tasting soup. The beef and tendon was tender and the noodles had a good chew but I was missing some soul from this dish.

We lucked out better with the house special dumplings. Filed with shrimp and fish, these were smooth and easily snackable. I had three before I even knew it. When my friend asked me what my favorite dish was, I had to say these dumplings though it was actually the wood ear and celery salad. It’s possible we didn’t order the best dishes and I should give them another chance but … I decided that everything tasted too healthy, too clean. Which is not to say I like dirty and grubby places but I expected some flavor from Tasty Dumpling.

It’s time to go on updated SGV dumplings crawl to find the best dumplings. And best beef noodle soup!
