Return to the Ox

fava beans

The last time I was at Lazy Ox Canteen, it was when they received their LA Times review. The restaurant already had a lot of buzz in the foodie community but now it seemed the whole world was converging on the place. I didn’t want to deal with the crowds but eventually, I couldn’t wait any longer and gathered a group to go. Most of the people I went with that evening had never been to Lazy Ox Canteen.

green barley salad

I was very happy later when Chef Josef came out of the kitchen to thank me for coming in. He said he recognized me from other times I’d been there. I’m no chef groupie (ahem) but I was thrilled.

crispy broccoli leaves

cauliflower

Unlike my recent Animal meal, we ordered more veggie stuff than anything. I love all the veggie stuff at Lazy Ox and this night proved exceptional.

chicken liver

baco

Simply, I love the baco.

Also, when did I start loving liver so much? I blame it on foie gras and the search to find equally beautiful liver. I might as well eat more since my own liver committed suicide once I became a boozer, uh, cocktailian.

soft shell crab

yellowtail collar

Seafood was up next. I was wary of soft shell crab until I actually tried it and from that point on, I tend to order it wherever I god. I also love yellowtail but the pototao croquette in this dish was amazing. You know that ovoid hash brown patty from a certain fast food restaurant. Think clown and arches. Well, admittedly I’m a fiend for hash browns and this was the holy grail.

lamb belly

lengua ravioli

We couldn’t leave without a couple of meat dishes, of course. The lamb belly was nicely crispy and I enjoyed the fresh peas in the lengua ravioli very much.

family dinner: spaghetti

spaghetti and meatballs

Oh dear god, there was only 5 of us but somehow we all thought it was a great idea to order the family dinner which happened to be spaghetti and meatballs that night. The pic with the “good light” me taking the pic while Pepsi Monster shone his cellphone light on the plate. I’m not sure how I feel about it but it does make crisper pics.

rice pudding

And yes, we did end on a sweet note. My favorite rice pudding!
